All livestock species and most pet species were completely eliminated, leaving humans with few, if no animal companions. Because of the Combine influence, any animal that was reliant on human care was almost immediately wiped out, both purposefully and inadvertently as humans were no longer available to care for them. The most notable toll was on human-domesticated animals. Nearly 75% of land animals and over 68% of marine animals went extinct in this time frame. Animals took a lot of hits as well, and in the remaining 20 years before liberation, the resulting environmental tolls as well as continued extermination caused this sixth mass extinction- arguably just as bad or worse than the meteorite that killed the dinosaurs. However, not all of these casualties were humans. In the wake of the 7 hour war and the proceeding Combine invasion, there was a large amount of casualties. So, why was the fast headcrab cut? According an earlier interview from GameSpot with Valve’s Dario Casali, the thing was just too scary. Yeah, imagine those teeth trying to chomp their way into your face. While the top side of the red-legged monster isn’t quite as grotesque as the acid-spitting variant seen in the full game, look below the surface and you’ll be greeted with this…

Twitter user JaycieErysdren made the discovery, complete with images of what’s apparently a fully-modeled headcrab. We missed this last month but datamining the game seems to have uncovered the Fast Headcrab enemy from Half-Life 2 alive and well in Alyx. Thought the headcrabs of Half-Life: Alyx were terrifying enough? Just be glad Valve cut this gruesome critter from the game.
